On Friday June 25 the North Highlands Fire Department responded mutual aid to the Putnam Valley fire Department for a working structure fire on South Highland Rd. This was the 2nd call for a working structure fire within 24hrs.

On Thursday June 24th with temperatures near 100 degrees, the North Highlands fire Department responded mutual aid to the Cold Spring FD for a working Structure fire on Windy Ridge in the Town of Philipstown.

Upon arrival of the CSFD they found heavy fire in the attached garage extending into the main body of the house.

An aggressive attack was made by the members of the CSFD who were later assisted by many mutual aid departments at the scene.

Firefighters from the North Highlands Fire Department were joined by volunteers from several surrounding departments in battling a blaze in a single-family home on East Mountain Road South late Wednesday and early today.

North Highlands Fire Chief Joseph Hyatt said firefighters arriving at the home at 307 E. Mountain Road South minutes after the 10:06 p.m. call saw flames shooting high into the night sky.

"The flames were 30 to 40 feet high, coming through the roof on the back side of the house," Hyatt said today.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused extensive damage to the home and rousted the family living there. Hyatt said the parents spent the night at the home of a North Highlands firefighter the family knows, while the children stayed with other family members.

Hyatt said Putnam County fire investigators determined that the blaze started in the basement near a wood stove then spread upward, damaging first-floor support beams and causing smoke damage throughout much of the two-story home. The damaged beams will likely need to be replaced, he said.

"They got the main body of the fire knocked down in about 10 minutes and then spent time dousing hot spots. It was an older house with a lot of voids in the walls. Some of the house has a full basement but other areas it's just a crawl space with dirt floors," Hyatt said.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 1:10 a.m. today.

North Highlands firefighters were assisted by volunteers from Cold Spring, Garrison, Rombout, Fishkill, Glenham, Hughsonville and Continental Village departments. The Philipstown Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

Sealed bids for the purchase by the Philipstown North Highlands Fire District of a Pumper Rescue with 1000 gallon water tank incorporating other miscellaneous equipment will be received at 504 Fishkill Road, Cold Spring New York 10516, Philipstown North Highlands Fire House, until May 13, 2010 at 7:15 p.m., at which time bids for the apparatus will be publicly opened and read aloud.

Specifications for the vehicle and equipment may be obtained by interested suppliers free of charge at 504 Fishkill Road, Cold Spring, New York 10516, 845-265-7285, extension 14, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

A bid bond or certified check in the amount of 5% of the bid amount must accompany bids submitted.

The Philipstown North Highlands Fire District reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to accept the bid best suited for its specific needs.

All bids must include a non-collusive bid statement pursuant to section 103-D of the general municipal law.

Bids shall be in accordance with the instructions to bidders.
