A Cold Spring family was homeless but glad to be safe Saturday after a Christmas Eve fire in their home on Main Street.

"We're all OK", said Astrid Harrison, who was at the house Saturday. "We're right in the middle of cleaning everything up." She declined to say where the family was staying but the large, recently built house was uninhabitable, she said.

A family dog died in the fire, which was reported at 7 p.m. Thursday, but the family of five escaped, including three children. No cause has been determined.

The fire started in an addition on the east side of the large house and burned through the roof and most of the first floor in the two-story home. It was brought under control about an hour later, said Cold Spring Fire Chief Tom Merrigan.

More than 100 firefighters turned out to help, Merrigan said, and many stayed until the early hours of Christmas Day.

Firefighters from Cold Spring, North Highlands, Garrison, Continental Village, Fishkill, Rombout, Hughsonville, Beacon and Philipstown were on the scene, and Putnam Valley was on standby.

The fire is under investigation by the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team.
