North Highlands Engine Co. #1 Honors the Fallen and Reaffirms Our Promise to Never Forget

On September 11, 2026, our nation marks 25 years since a day that forever changed America.
Twenty-five years have passed, yet the images, stories, heroism and sacrifice of September 11, 2001 remain deeply embedded in the history of the American fire service and in the hearts of communities across our country.

Nearly 3,000 innocent people were killed in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. Among those lost were 343 members of the FDNY who answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice while attempting to save others.

For firefighters, September 11 carries a special meaning. We remember firefighters climbing stairwells while thousands of people were trying to escape. We remember police officers, EMS personnel and other first responders who ran toward danger. We remember ordinary citizens who helped strangers, and we remember the countless men and women who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts in the days and months that followed.

The sacrifice did not end when the smoke cleared. Hundreds of FDNY members have since died from illnesses related to their service at the World Trade Center, and many more responders continue to live with the lasting health effects of that day and its aftermath.

Twenty-five years later, the members of North Highlands Engine Co. # 1 pause to remember every life lost, honor every sacrifice made, and recognize the families who have carried that loss for a quarter century.

We also ask our community to help ensure that future generations understand what happened that September morning and the extraordinary acts of courage that followed.
